I. INFLACIÓN GENERAL EN MÉXICO

Food basket and minimum wage: it still falls short

The cost of basic food items increased year-on-year in June 2026: 3.1% in rural areas and 4.6% in urban areas.

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) has updated the Poverty Lines (PL) for June 2026, broken down by rural and urban areas. These lines provide a monetary benchmark to determine whether a population’s income is sufficient to purchase the goods, services, and food included in the basic food and non-food baskets. The calculation is based on the National Consumer Price Index (INPC). The objective is to establish a monetary threshold for measuring Multidimensional Poverty (MP) in Mexico.

I. GENERAL INFLATION IN MEXICO

The annual general inflation rate for June 2026 was 3.4% (see Table 1), representing a decrease of 0.9 percentage points compared to June 2025 (4.3%).¹ Meanwhile, the monthly general inflation rate for June 2026 (-0.3%) decreased by 0.1 percentage points compared to the previous month (-0.2%). This marks the second consecutive month with a monthly decrease.

II. EXTREME POVERTY LINES BY INCOME (FOOD BASKET)

In June 2026, the monthly monetary value of the Extreme Poverty Lines by Income (LPEI) decreased by 2.7% in rural areas and 1.7% in urban areas. The categories of tomatoes, chili peppers, and white and brown chicken eggs had the greatest impact on the variation in both rural and urban areas, although the first two had a greater impact in urban areas and the third in rural areas.

In June 2026, the annual percentage changes in the LPEI (Limited Price Index for the Food Basket) were 3.1% in rural areas and 4.6% in urban areas. In the latter case, the increase exceeded the general annual inflation rate (3.4%) by 1.2 percentage points. When comparing the annual variation growth of the LPEI in June 2026 with that recorded in the same month of 2025—when the annual variation was 5.2% in rural areas and 6.0% in urban areas—a decrease of 2.1 and 1.5 percentage points, respectively, was observed.

In both areas, food and beverages consumed outside the home, potatoes, and tomatoes, in that order, contributed most to the annual increase in the monetary value of the basic food basket.

However, the minimum wage is insufficient to cover a family’s needs and should be increased by $5,213.46 pesos.
